History of the Wright Brothers

Wright Bersaudara

Wilbur and Orville Wright, famously called The Wright Brothers, were the pioneers of aviation. The brothers invented the first fully practical aeroplane in 1905. Two years before they made the first aeroplane, they invented the first powered, sustained, and controlled aeroplane flight.

Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867. He was born near Millville, Indiana. The younger brother, Orville Wright, was born in 1871. The family had five children with Wilbur Wright was the middle child.

Their father, Milton Wright, often left his family because of his job. His occupation was a bishop. He often bought back small toys for his children when he got home from his journey. One day in 1878, Milton brought back a small model helicopter made of cork, bamboo, and paper. The toy helicopter was powered by a rubber band to twirl its blades. The toy’s design was based on the French aeronautical pioneer, Alphonse Pénaud. The Wright Brother was fascinated by the toy and its mechanics. Because of that, they pursued their interests in aeronautics and flying.

Years after that, the Wright Brothers invented the wings design that is able to fly an aeroplane. Their invention was based on how birds angled their wings for balance and control. They were trying to emulate how birds fly which later developed a concept called “wing warping”. They succeeded in flying their first plane after adding a moveable rudder to their prototype on December 17, 1903. Wilbur was the pilot of that historical flight. He flew their plane for 59 seconds at 852 feet.

However, their success was not appreciated. The press, as well as fellow flight experts, were reluctant to give the Wright Brothers acknowledgment. With that, Wilbur decided to go to Europe in 1908. He got more credits there. People also gave good response about their achievements. Orville joined his brother in Europe in 1909 along with Katharine, their younger sister.

The Wright Brother became popular in Europe. They had the celebrity status. They even got hosted by royals and heads of state. They also constantly got featured in the press.

Before returning to the United States in 1909, they began to sell their aeroplanes. Their successful invention leads to them became wealthy businessmen. They were filling contracts for aeroplanes in Europe and the United States.
